Perfecting the Rumpus Room: A Space for Living and Leisure
In a home designed for living well, the most meaningful spaces are those where life happens—both the lively and the quiet moments. Our “Rumpus Room” transformation from our Haven on the Hill project embodies this ethos: a family-centered space that balances purposeful design with laid-back comfort, grounded in material authenticity and lived-in ease.
A Room for Togetherness
At the outset of this project we were guided by how this Marin County home’s family would live, not just what they’d look at. Their wish: a gathering place—where kids and adults alike could feel relaxed, spirited, and at home. The design brief became clear: durable materials, generous comfort, and a palette that felt casually cohesive, not precious.
Curated Comfort, Built to Last
When durability meets intention, design begins to serve how one truly lives. We selected performance textiles and a wool-based rug—both practical and refined. An oversized sectional anchors the room, scaled for the whole family to lounge and connect. The material palette: slate greys, chalky whites, soft blacks—balanced, calm, and quietly resilient.
Height & Material Matter
We treated the space as both an interior and an experience. Ceilings were embraced, proportions refined, and textures layered thoughtfully. Built-in cabinetry was calibrated to disappear visually, allowing furnishings and seating to become the protagonists. Light—both natural and designed—was choreographed to enliven the room from day to night.
Entertainment Meets Everyday
Whether it’s movie night, gaming with friends, or reading in a corner with a view, the design supports it all. We incorporated flexible lighting zones, integrated media storage, and comfortable lounging. Design in service of life’s rhythms, quietly sophisticated but wholly functional.
A Palette for Life’s Moments
Neutral doesn’t mean invisible. Natural fabrics, matte finishes, and tactile surfaces—these define the room. The bold layering of scale and substance: a sculptural coffee table, textured pillows, and intentionally arranged nooks that invite lingering. This is refined living, reimagined for family life.
The Maison Blanc Design Approach
At Maison Blanc, we believe luxury is more than aesthetics—it’s the feeling you arrive at, the calm you sense, the way your home evolves with you. This Rumpus Room stands as a testament to that philosophy: curated spaces made for real life, timeless interiors built for moments that matter.
